A point cloud is a collection of measured data points assembled in a digital space. Point clouds are one of the primary outputs of a drone-based photogrammetry survey, both in photogrammetry and LiDAR, which display the details of a digital elevation model.
Point cloud files can be used in a variety of CAD based software tools for measuring and manipulating reality data. Point clouds from drone topographic surveys can be used to create design surfaces for engineering and architecture, or can capture highly accurate existing conditions of a site.
Point clouds from drone surveys are also useful for calculating cut and fill in earthworks projects, and measuring the volumes of stockpiles.
